Google has acquired Gizmo5, a VoIP service that connects Internet users to landline and mobile phones, according to a blog post published on the Google Voice blog. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Earlier this week, TechCrunch wrote of the deal’s possibility, reporting that the search giant acquired the company for $30 million. It is thought that Gizmo5 could provide integration across Google’s communication tools, like Google Voice and Google Talk. Google Voice, a web-based calling and voicemail service, requires that users have a standard phone. Gimzo5 could potentially expand that functionality.

Google says there are no specific features to announce with the Gizmo5 acquisition, though it does say that the teams are working together to bring more useful features to Voice. [via mocoNews]

YES!!! This is what I hope to be the beginning of DATA ONLY cell phones. Google needs to work a great deal out with the current landscape of ISP providers. But wouldn’t it be great if we could all wake up one day and not have to worry how many minutes we’re using. Free communication people! Based on your current data plan that is. ;-P
